Further testing means they still don’t know what the injury is, which in itself is concerning. This is now the fifth documented injury that McCarthy has suffered in 11 games played across the preseason and regular season. The latest injury will bring up multiple questions about his future and whether he should be trusted as the starting quarterback.

What could further testing bring? It’s a complicated question to answer, because there can be a myriad of different injuries.

Broken bone

Yes, we did get the report from Goessling that McCarthy didn’t break a bone and the X-rays were negative. However, they don’t always catch everything.

McCarthy could have what’s called an occult fracture, which is one that doesn’t show up on initial X-rays. It also causes pain, swelling, and tenderness after either an injury or repetitive stress.

Torn ligaments

Torn ligaments are relatively common injuries to the finger. They can happen in a multitude of ways and wouldn’t show up in an X-ray. That could require surgery on the finger, which would end his season.

Deep bone bruise

When you saw the clip, it appeared like the training staff was putting pressure on his hand, and McCarthy winced in pain. That could explain the immense pain he showed with the X-ray being negative. Those can be excruciatingly painful, but not something that would keep him out for a long period of time.
