1 winner and 7 losers from the Lions’ loss to the Steelers

The Lions played one of the ugliest games we’ve seen in a long time in Week 16 against the Steelers.

While there’s still one more way into the playoffs for the Detroit Lions, this season is pretty much over for all intents and purposes.

The Lions needed to win three games in a row, but instead, they just lost the first one, and here we are now. I’ve got one winner and seven losers from this game.

Winners

Kingsley Eguakun

Kingsley Eguakun finally got his opportunity to start in the NFL, and he didn’t disappoint. He allowed one pressure and no sacks.

He also laid out a huge block that sprung Amon-Ra St. Brown for a big 24-yard gain on the Lions’ final drive. Coming out of this game, it’s worth it to give him the start at center for the rest of the season. This thing is over. Let’s see what the kid can do.

Losers

Jared Goff

Jared Goff didn’t do anything bad in this game. He’s in this section because the Lions have essentially wasted what would probably be another MVP-caliber season for him if the Lions had a winning record. He’s at the top of the league in every passing category.

On Sunday, he joined Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Drew Brees, Dan Marino, and Peyton Manning as just the sixth quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in three consecutive seasons. Now, it’s just a forgotten season.

Aidan Hutchinson

Yes, he had two sacks, but this was not a good outing for him. After that second sack, Hutchinson was taken off the board. He didn’t even record another pressure after that sack.

This was supposed to be a gimme game for him, going up against an undrafted rookie left tackle and a backup left guard. It just didn’t happen. Part of that has something to do with the Steelers getting the ball out fast and running it all over the Lions.

Kelvin Sheppard

I’ll start by saying this. You’re crazy if you think the move for the Lions is to fire Sheppard. This isn’t 2008. Firing coaches is not the answer. This is a good team dealing with injury setbacks and a young offensive line that needs to grow.

With all that said, it was a bad week to stand in front of everyone and proclaim that no team has run the ball down the Lions’ throat. The Steelers did just that on Sunday. They ran for over 200 yards.

Penei Sewell

One of the best run blockers in the NFL had arguably the worst run blocking game of his entire career. Nobody on this offensive line blocked well on the run, but who would have thought there would be a world where Sewell is the lowest graded run blocker of the game?

Amon-Ra St. Brown

Where did the drops come from? St. Brown has nine of them this season. He didn’t even have nine combined through his entire career ahead of this season. He had a huge game-winning touchdown that got called back, and then he committed the big offensive pass interference call that ended the game — just a bad night.

Christian Mahogany

Christian Mahogany was not ready to come back for this game, and it showed. He allowed five pressures and a sack. He just didn’t look like he had his usual mobility in this game, and it clearly affected his play.

Alex Anzalone

Aaron Rodgers picked Alex Anzalone apart in this game. He targeted him eight times and completed seven passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. In what might have been Anzalone’s last game at Ford Field, he did not go out the way he probably wanted to.
