While the majority of the focus for the Ohio State Buckeyes is on the Miami Hurricanes and the College Football Playoff, the transfer portal is quickly approaching

Ohio State will have to navigate the transfer portal on Jan. 2, when it hopes to be preparing for the College Football Playoff semifinal. Players around the college football landscape are already making their intentions clear that they will hit the portal, including one former Buckeyes quarterback.

Former Buckeye QB Air Noland to leave South Carolina, and the writing was on the wall

According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett, former Ohio State QB Air Noland will be entering the transfer portal for a second time in his career. Noland spent the 2025 season as a redshirt freshman with South Carolina after spending the 2024 season with the Buckeyes.

Noland’s decision to leave school makes plenty of sense after South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers made it clear that he was coming back for another season. Nolan appeared in two games at South Carolina this season with three passing attempts and one rush. Entering his third year of college football in 2026, it makes sense for Sellers to land somewhere he can get on the field.

Air Noland’s departure from Ohio State was simple

Noland was a member of the 2024 recruiting class, the same one that the Buckeyes recruited Julian Sayin in before he committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Noland was the No. 4 QB and No. 56 player nationally in the class of 2024, according to 247 Sports Composite. Once Nick Saban retired, the Buckeyes got Sayin in the transfer portal after just a couple of weeks at Alabama.

Sayin was the No. 1 quarterback in the class and was always going to be an eventual starter for the Buckeyes. Ohio State landed five-star QB Tavien St. Clair in 2025, and he’s expected to be the successor to Sayin. Noland was simply the odd man out once Sayin arrived and is still trying to find the right place for him in what is a wild college football landscape.
