Latest intel on transfer quarterback that would be a dream fit for Tennessee isn’t positive for the Vols
The Tennessee Vols are among the teams that are expected to be in the market for a transfer quarterback this offseason.
The Tennessee Vols will likely add a transfer quarterback to their roster this offseason.
For now, we’re unsure whether Josh Heupel and his coaching staff will pursue a quarterback who could serve as Tennessee’s starter in 2026, or if they’ll look to add a depth option.
If the Vols choose to pursue a starting-caliber option, then USF transfer quarterback Byrum Brown would be an ideal fit.
Brown passed for 3,158 yards, 28 touchdowns, and seven interceptions last season while rushing for 1,008 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Brown, a North Carolina native who has one season of eligibility remaining, spent the last three seasons at USF playing under head coach Alex Golesh.
Golesh served as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022, and he ran a similar offense at USF, which means Brown would be a seamless fit in Heupel’s offense at Tennessee.
Auburn is the early favorite for Byrum Brown
While Tennessee would be a great landing spot for Brown, it’s Auburn that’s the early favorite for the USF transfer.
That’s because, of course, Golesh recently took over as the head coach at Auburn.
“Sources have indicated to On3 that the early school to watch at this point is clearly Auburn,” wrote On3’s Pete Nakos on Monday. “His former USF head coach, Alex Golesh, recently accepted the SEC job and a reunion on The Plains is in the cards.”
Nakos also mentioned Miami as a possibility, but he noted that Auburn currently has the momentum for Brown.
Transfer decisions can change at a moment’s notice, so it’s not a guarantee that Brown will end up at Auburn.
Tennessee would be smart to check in with Brown to see if he’s interested in the idea of playing in Heupel’s offense and throwing to elite wide receivers like Braylon Staley, Mike Matthews, Radarious Jackson, and Travis Smith Jr.
There are plenty of quarterback options that would make sense for the Vols. But Brown’s dynamic play-making ability combined with his experience in Golesh’s offense makes him arguably the best fit available for Tennessee.
