Steelers wide receiver receives a blessing in disguise after NFL decides to suspend DK Metcalf for remainder of 2025 season
It is now or never for the young Steelers WR.
As the weather gets colder and the season of winter officially begins in the United States, Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense are getting hot at the perfect time. The last three games have been the best we have seen from Rodgers in a Steelers uniform, and it’s not a coincidence.
The Steelers have gone from a youth movement to a veteran one in their wide receiver corps in an effort to create confidence and comfort for Aaron Rodgers. It has worked, with players like Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Adam Thielen, and DK Metcalf taking on the lion’s share of the workload. However, with the latter of those three now out of the lineup, it could be time for the return of a healthy scratch.
Roman Wilson receives a golden opportunity following the suspension of DK Metcalf
Wilson has been inactive for weeks despite showing flashes earlier this year. His ability to separate on tape is noticeable, and what few targets and receptions he’s received, he has tended to make the most of them, often despite misses from both Mason Rudolph and Rodgers.
The truth is, it was never a surprise to see Wilson be a healthy scratch these last few weeks. For one, we know Aaron Rodgers has a history of wanting “his guys” at the WR position. You saw it with players like Randall Cobb during his return to Green Bay and then to New York. Rodgers was a key player in getting the Jets to trade for Davante Adams last season and it’s not a coincidence that his former teammate MVS is catching TDs.
But trust issues between Rodgers and Wilson go all the way back to training camp, where the veteran QB said he needed the second year wide receiver to get out of his own head and start trusting himself.
“I got to get [Wilson] out of his head a little bit,” Rodgers said via the Pittsburgh Steelers YouTube channel back in August. “I think he’s such a good kid. He cares so much about whether it’s my approval or if he’s doing it right.”
“He’s just got to trust himself because he’s so damn talented. The more that he can play free and not think out there, the better he’s going to play. The more he can just trust what he’s got and just go out and react, the better he’s going to play.”
With Metcalf now out for the last two games and questions about the health of Calvin Austin III, it could be now or never for Wilson regarding his future with the Steelers.
