With every Indianapolis Colts loss, more and more people are wondering if the team should at least give Anthony Richardson the chance to take the field before the year ends.

The team still technically has a shot at the playoffs, and it seems that while that is the case, Philip Rivers will remain the starter. There is, however, a world where the Colts are eliminated from the playoffs before they even take the field in Week 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

If that chance becomes a reality, could the team give Richardson the reps over the future Hall of Famer? Before that even becomes an option, the team must activate their 2023 first-round pick off the IR, and head coach Shane Steichen shared an update on that front.

Anthony Richardson won’t play in Week 17 and won’t be activated from IR

Richardson won’t make his return from the IR in Week 17, which only leaves him one more game in 2025 where he has a chance to play. That being the team’s season finale in Week 18, when they travel to take on the Houston Texans.

At this rate, it feels like the only chance Richardson would get to start that game is if the Colts are eliminated from playoff contention. Even then, there is probably a world where the team feels like they owe it to Rivers, who pushed off his Hall of Fame chances five more years to return.

Due to Daniel Jones’ injury, there’s certainly a world where Richardson is given a chance to start for the team in 2026. If that possibility is on the team’s mind at all, then getting him on the field in Week 18 would be a bigger deal than many realize. It would give the young QB a chance to build some confidence ahead of a 2026 season that will be crucial for him and the team.
