Tampa Bay’s defense continues to allow big plays at an alarming rate, and it’s been one of many reasons why their once-promising season has gone flying off the rails late in the year. Whether it’s been a bad pass rush or bad technique in the secondary, the Bucs have been awful on that side of the ball in particular on their way to six losses in their last seven games.

At this time of year, finding help off the street or from another team is almost impossible. However, the Bucs could be set to help some major help along the defensive line from a return of one of their own.

According to Bucs reporter Scott Smith, DL Calijah Kancey had his 21-day practice window opened to return from injured reserve. He was listed as a limited practice participant on Wednesday.

Tampa Bay lost Kancey back at the beginning of the season in what proved to be a terribly costly win over the Houston Texans 20-19 in Week 2. Kancey suffered a pectoral injury that put him on injured reserve. He was one of three starters lost for a significant amount of time that game. Offensive linemen Luke Goedeke and Cody Mauch both suffered major injuries against the Texans. Goedeke aggravated a foot injury and missed six games. Mauch was lost for the season with a knee injury.

Kancey will have 21 days from Wednesday to be activated off of injured reserve which can happen at any point during that window that the team chooses. If he isn’t activated during that window, his season would be over. That period of time runs through the week leading up to what would be divisional round of the playoffs, so that would be the end of his time to be able to come back.

We’ll see if he’s able to gain clearance back in time to help the Bucs try to claw their way past Carolina to their fifth straight NFC South title. At this point, the Bucs need all the help they can get.
