The Florida Gators lost another star player to the transfer portal on Christmas Eve, as wide receiver Tre Wilson has decided to enter when it opens on Jan. 2nd.

This is a tough one for the Gators since Wilson was a staple in the wide receiver room for the three years in Gainesville. It didn’t take him long to make an impact, including scoring a touchdown as a true freshman against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Gators are prepared to lose Tre Wilson to the transfer portal

In his three seasons in Gainesville, Wilson was a standout, but injuries marred his time. He played in 10 games as a true freshman, tallying 61 catches for 538 yards and six touchdowns. He dealt with injuries as a freshman, but they worsened over time.

Over the next two seasons, Wilson missed a whopping 13 games, playing in just 12. In those games, Wilson was much less productive, catching 46 passes for 505 yards and four touchdowns. The injuries have been the common denominator for Wilson, who will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he chooses to go.

The good thing for the Gators is they are ready to have players step up and fill his role. Assuming both Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson return, they have already proven to be elite-level playmakers, and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner will know how to maximize their abilities. Plus, T.J. Abrams has already agreed to a deal to return, and he can fill the slot role.

Plus, the Gators have three uber-talented receivers coming in as true freshmen, led by Davian Groce from Frisco Lone Star in Texas, local product Justin Williams, and Marquez Daniel, who nearly committed to Auburn, where new wide receivers coach Marcus Davis was recruiting him.

It’s never good to lose a player like Wilson, but the Gators are prepared for him to leave.
