The Florida Gators got a huge win the day after Christmas with wide receiver Vernell Brown III re-signing with the program. It’s the first huge re-signing for the Gators under new head coach Jon Sumrall after losing multiple players to the transfer portal.

Vernell Brown III returning for sophomore season

It’s a big one for the Gators. Right after the season, we identified a few priorities for Sumrall with the roster, and Brown was at the top of the list. With Dallas Wilson during fall camp, it opened up a spot for Brown to get playing time immediately in Week 1 against Long Island.

In that game, Brown was the leading receiver for the Gators, and had an Odell Beckham Jr. style highlight catch.

He was solid throughout the season as a true freshman. The son of a legacy, as his dad played for the Gators over 20 years ago, Brown has yet to score a touchdown, but caught 40 passes for 512 yards mostly from the slot. With Tre Wilson entering the transfer portal, Brown is going to be much more important to the Gators’ offense under Buster Faulkner.

Jon Sumrall can shift focus to Jadan Baugh and others

Now that Brown is locked up for next season, Sumrall can focus on other priorities. Dallas Wilson is going to be a big one for the Gators. He was a five-star recruit last year, and had a dominant spring game that had fans salivating to see him in the fall. Wilson dealt with injuries throughout the season, and preserved his redshirt after playing just four games.

Jayden Woods is the top guy on the defensive side of the football, especially after he scored an interception against the Ole Miss Rebels. While both players are huge assets, the number one priority is Jadan Baugh. Sumrall brought Faulkner and new running backs coach Chris Foster to visit Baugh in his home, and the meeting reportedly went well.

If the Gators can get all three to join Brown in re-signing, Sumrall will be in great shape.
