Expected transfer portal departure not likely to be with the Ohio State Buckeyes for the College Football Playoff
Ohio State’s wide receiver depth has taken a bit of a hit to the transfer portal ahead of facing Miami.
The transfer portal window is quickly approaching, and many players across the college football landscape have already made it known that they intend to enter.
If Ohio State can beat Miami on Dec. 31, it will be preparing for Ole Miss or Georgia when the transfer portal opens on Jan. 2. Unfortunately, the top teams are tasked with maneuvering the portal and winning games at the same time. One player for the Buckeyes has already made his intentions known.
WR Bryson Rodgers is not with Ohio State as they prepare for Miami
According to Lettermen Row, WR Bryson Rodgers was not with the Buckeyes at practice on Friday, and it appears that he will not be with the team for its College Football Playoff run.
Rodgers spent the last three seasons with the Buckeyes and recently made his portal intentions known, but it doesn’t look like he will be with the team for its most important stretch this year. While Rodgers isn’t a starter, it is a shot to their depth ahead of the postseason.
Rodgers was a backup on the two deep for the Buckeyes this season behind Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, and Brandon Inniss. The former four-star recruit only appeared in seven games this season with six catches for 79 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Rodgers’ speed was a part of his game that could make an impact at Ohio State, but the Buckeyes don’t do much rotating at wide receiver. The lack of plays Ohio State runs on offense, due to their slowed-down pace, also plays a factor in that.
A new opportunity is there for a couple of Buckeyes
Ohio State will keep its top guys on the field as much as it can in the CFP, or at least that should be the plan. Rodgers wasn’t going to have much time on the field the next few games, outside of special teams possibilities, and any injuries that come up.
With Rodgers not with the team, that means guys like Mylan Graham, Quincy Porter, David Adolph, and Phillip Bell need to be ready for their name to be called. As long as Graham and Porter stick around past this season, they’re two players who will have a chance at a starting role for Ohio State next fall.
