Michigan new head coach Kyle Whittingham makes expected admission about Ohio State in his entry presser with the Wolverines
Just what you’d expect from a head coach leading the Michigan Wolverines.
When the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Michigan Wolverines 27-9 at the end of November, no one had that being Sherrone Moore’s last game as the head coach in Ann Arbor.
It was, as Michigan fired him for cause a couple of weeks later before Michigan played its bowl game. The coaching search took only around three weeks for the Wolverines. Michigan didn’t get its initial want on the coaching front, but it landed on a proven, veteran head coach with Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham was introduced recently as the next head coach of Michigan and of course, the Buckeyes were brought up.
Kyle Whittingham is no longer fond of the Ohio State Buckeyes
Whittingham was asked on Sunday if he dislikes Ohio State, and his answer went about as you’d expect.
“I do now, I guess” Whittingham said with a laugh.
“I think they’ve got a good football team,” Whittingham stated. “They’re in the playoffs, obviously. They’re very talented.”
The comment from Whittingham should come as no surprise. When you’re leading either one of these programs, you need to understand the rivalry. Neither of these teams has ever liked each other and they never will. Whittingham coached under former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer at Utah for two seasons beginning in 2003. Meyer was of course 7-0 against Michigan as the head man in Columbus. Whittingham is from California and has never coached in the Big Ten region, let alone in Michigan.
Whittingham won’t get his first crack at the Buckeyes until next April, but in the meantime, he can get fans to buy in with comments like the one about disliking the Buckeyes. Michigan needs a major culture shift after the past couple of seasons, and they may have found the veteran head coach to make it happen.
