Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman finally breaks silence on his future with the Fighting Irish
We finally know the future for Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman after a long string of silence.
Once the 2025 college football season ended abruptly for Notre Dame, fans from all over the country waited patiently for an update on the future of head coach Marcus Freeman. Unless you have been living under a rock the last several weeks, you know that the Fighting Irish head coach has been courted for nearly every single big job opening. That is true both on the college and NFL side, with the New York Giants opening creating the most smoke out there.
When athletic director Pete Bevacqua held a press conference the Monday after the College Football Playoff final ranking, most had hoped that it would be dedicated to announcing another extension for Freeman, or at least having a stronger statement about this commitment to the Notre Dame program. That strong statement didn’t happen, and the longer there wasn’t a statement from Freeman, the more anxious the fanbase would become. Everyone needed their nerves calmed around South Bend.
That statement finally came on Monday. It was short and sweet via Freeman on X. He is running it back in 2026.
While that calms the nerves for the short term of the Notre Dame program, this offseason was never going to be the time that Freeman left. The post was merely to quiet all the noise that is out there, but folks around the program had felt good about him returning for some time now. 2026 is viewed as an all-in scenario for the Irish program with so much talent coming back, and an outstanding 2026 recruiting class coming in.
Freeman is a competitive person, and I never believed that he would walk away from that opportunity. At least not right now.
Long-term outlook for Marcus Freeman
There is not a ton of intel here, but I don’t feel great about Freeman being here for the long haul with Notre Dame. Starting next offseason, the job smoke feels like it is going to get a lot more real, especially for NFL jobs that will be coming open. If you are an Irish fan, you need to understand that Freeman is still a 39-year old head coach who has more career aspirations. It would be great if he wanted to stay with Notre Dame his entire career (and let’s hope that he does!), but I don’t believe that happening is overly likely.
No matter how long Freeman is here, savor every moment if you are a Notre Dame fan. There is a reason why he is so highly coveted of a commodity. He is obviously a great recruiter and an improving head coach, but it goes much deeper than that. Freeman is a legitimately good person who is a tremendous spokesperson for whatever college football or NFL team he will ever be a part of.
For now, let’s keep it simple and not worry about too much. Freeman is back. Let’s go win a national championship next season.
