The Dallas Cowboys’ regular season finale will come with the always controversial label of “meaningless” attached to it. And all that means is the Cowboys and New York Giants are eliminated from the playoffs, which means it’s decision time for coaching staffs: Will starters play?

On Monday, head coach Brian Schottenheimer erased any doubt: Dak Prescott and healthy starters will be taking the field in Week 18.

Schottenheimer announces Prescott decision

After Prescott was sacked six times and hit another 11 in a Week 17 win over the Washington Commanders, it appeared Schottenheimer had a difficult decision to make. Should he risk his quarterback in the season finale?

“We’re planning on finishing strong and having Dak play,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “We have a chance to go 5-1 hopefully in the division, finish 8-8-1. That’s the plan as we look at it right now.”

As for the rest of the Cowboys starters?

“If they’re healthy, we plan on playing them,” Schottenheimer added. “If you’re going to play Dak Prescott, if the guys are healthy, we want to play them.”

Decision shows consistency from Cowboys coach

Though there’s a case to be made against Schottenheimer’s decision—mostly focusing on keeping Prescott and other stars healthy—it’s tough to not respect it. After all, the Cowboys head coach has been very clear he’s prioritizing building a culture over anything else. And to do that, you have to win. Regardless of opponent or situation.

Think about it this way: Right now, the Cowboys have only one win streak to show off for the 2025 season. A victory on Sunday would make it two. It’s not much, but it’s important to stack wins in the NFL. It’s also the right process, a big word for Schottenheimer.

“I’m a guy that’s all about process,” Schotty said. “I’m going to be the same guy every day, every week. This week is no different. These guys put a lot of time and effort into preparing for 17 games, that’s how many we signed up for. We’re going to compete to win all 17 of them, hopefully we can get [win] No. eight this weekend.”
