Cam Coleman’s huge NIL asking price in the transfer portal still doesn’t sniff Jeremiah Smith’s number at Ohio State

The transfer portal is just a few days away from opening and there’s expected to be plenty of movement around the college football landscape. The Ohio State Buckeyes hope to be preparing for a semifinal game in the College Football Playoff on Jan. 2 when the portal opens, but they’ll have to beat Miami on New Year’s Eve

Ohio State has had some big transfer portal wins with players like Caleb Downs, Quinshon Judkins, and Will Howard. The portal can be a great supplement to the roster and it often takes big dollars to get those kinds of players. One star wide receiver who has recently hit the portal is asking for a big check, though it doesn’t quite compare to what Buckeyes WR Jeremiah Smith is making.

Cam Coleman’s asking NIL price doesn’t reach Jeremiah Smith’s

Auburn WR Cam Coleman made his intentions known on Monday to start the week that he would be entering the transfer portal. It was reported here at A to Z Sports that Coleman is looking for an NIL deal worth $2.5 million. A team looking to add Coleman for the 2026 season would be paying a high price for a player they would have for essentially just one season. Coleman is expected to be one of the top wideouts in the 2027 NFL Draft, potentially only behind Smith. Smith is making in the area of $3.5 million for the 2025 season in comparison, which clears the 2026 asking price for Coleman with ease.

It would be no surprise to see Smith clear the $4 million amount for the 2026 season and his last year in Columbus. Coleman is a player who had 708 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 12 games with subpar quarterback play at Auburn this past season. As a true freshman last year, Coleman caught 37 passes for 598 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. While Coleman is a very good player who should put up bigger numbers with better quarterback play, he hasn’t been to the level of Smith.

Ohio State’s star playmaker has 2,401 receiving yards to go along with 26 touchdowns over the past two seasons. The South Florida native had 1,315 receiving yards as a true freshman last season as the No. 1 option for an Ohio State team that won the national championship. Ohio State is okay with paying such a price for Smith due to his proven ability in their offense and the numbers that he’s shown that he can already put up. The Buckeyes know they have an NFL Pro Bowl caliber wideout already and he’s still in college due to the rules, simply put.

NIL makes the college football world go around now. Someone is going to pay up big money for Coleman, and they’ll likely get a nice return for it. That asking price doesn’t quite sniff what the Buckeyes are paying Smith. Now just imagine what Smith could fetch in the transfer portal… it would be quite the number.
