Lions part ways with offensive coordinator John Morton
The Lions will officially be looking for a new offensive coordinator this offseason.
We all knew this day would come, the week that Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell took over play-calling from offensive coordinator John Morton. This is something that coordinators usually don’t survive, and we saw that when Campbell took over for Anthony Lynn in 2021.
Now Morton has the same fate as Lynn.
Lions part ways with offensive coordinator John Morton
Morton wound up being the Lions coordinator for eight games. There were some big numbers early on, but in his final three games, the Lions had some of the worst offensive performances in the Dan Campbell era. Or at least for some time.
In his final presser before the Lions game against the Bears, Morton stated that he loved Detroit and that he’d like to stay on staff in some way. But the Lions appear to be looking for some big changes, and this might just be the beginning.
You do have to wonder how this affects things with passing game coordinator David Shaw. He is Morton’s best friend and was brought in to be a part of Morton’s offense. Do the Lions look to go full scorched Earth on parts of this offense? If so, the Lions could have a lot of searching to do. We’ll see where things go.
