The transfer portal is here, which means instant madness and moves that are sure to shock the college football world. The Oklahoma Sooners are likely going to be a part of that. Half, if not more, of their offensive line has entered the portal, while other position groups have taken hits, too. So, we might see the Sooners get active in adding players through the portal.

So far, several players we know of have visits scheduled as we speak. Although we aren’t really sure what the exact dates are yet. Here are the few we know about so far; others are likely being scheduled now. The Sooners will have till Jan. 16 to add to their team with this portal window.

Transfer portal players who are expected to visit with the Sooners

  • Cody Sigler, Arkansas State DT: Sigler is 6’3, 300 pounds, and would be the perfect depth guy behind both David Stone and Jayden Jackson. That’s not a bad role on the Sooners’ defensive line, as we know they love to rotate guys in and out to keep everyone fresh. Sigler had five sacks last season and six pass deflections.
  • Hayden Hansen, Florida TE: In 37 career games, Hansen has over 600 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns, but is primarily looked at as a great run blocker, which Oklahoma needs in this offense. The 6’8, 280-pound tight end fits the mold for what OU is looking for.
  • Tucker Ashcraft, Wisconsin TE: Ashcraft is looking for a fresh start. He’s played in 29 career games, but not as many snaps as you’d expect in those three years. Ashcraft is 6’5, 260 pounds, and has 178 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in his career.
  • Maasai King, Akron OL: King is a 6’4, 305-pound offensive lineman who may be better inside than outside in the SEC. He’s played at Akron and been a standout. Now, he thinks he can make the jump in potentially his final year.
  • Lloyd Avant, Colorado State RB: Avant is heading into his third season and is likely going to look for a school where he can be the guy. I’m not sure Oklahoma would be that school, but maybe DeMarco Murray can talk him into being a valuable role player and rotational guy. He just finished his second season with 417 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Positions the Sooners will likely need to target in the transfer portal

The Sooners will need to target a bit of everything. They need the trenches, especially offensively. They’re losing a ton of offensive linemen to the portal. They’re losing a ton of defensive guys to the draft. And all of that production will need to be made up.

The Sooners specifically need a few tight ends, as well as a few linebackers. The secondary overall is fine, but it wouldn’t hurt if the Sooners added one or two guys, one each in the cornerback room and safety room. However, those guys would likely need to be veterans.

I’d be interested to see if the Sooners also try to put more weapons around John Mateer, if he is coming back. We’re still not sure whether Isaiah Sategna is coming back. Whether he is or not, they will need to add a body or two in that room for depth, competition, or maybe even a starter.

The Sooners have some work to do, but if they do it all the right way, there’s no reason they cannot be back in the College Football Playoff next season.
