Eagles QB Jalen Hurts quietly defends Nick Sirianni’s latest bold decision that could affect playoff race
The Eagles QB understands why they are resting starters.
As the Philadelphia Eagles prep for the Washington Commanders in Week 18, they are doing so with the idea in mind that many starters won’t play in the game. Instead, backup quarterback Tanner McKee is expected to get the start, alongside other depth players on both sides of the football. QB Jalen Hurts isn’t pushing back on the concept of a week of rest for the starters for Philly, either.

The quarterback for the Eagles was hopeful to suit up for the regular season finale, but he understands that risk involved for the most impactful players on the roster. Sirianni and his staff do not want to risk injury to someone or pushing a currently injured player to return just for the sake of reps.
“Just giving my trust to the coaches and trusting their plans in everything that we do. Obviously, I’m very competitive,” Hurts said, “Every opportunity we have, I want to take advantage of and try to go out there and complete at a high level. So if that opportunity is given to us this week, I’ll have that mentality just as I had last week.”
It is clear that Hurts respects the staff’s choice and wants he and his teammates to be as close to 100% as possible to kick off postseason play.
John Clark of NBC Philadelphia agrees with the choice by Philly’s staff as well. He carved out a great point about rest being helpful to them previously.
“When I think more about Nick Sirianni and the Eagles resting most of their key starters, I think back to how bad the Eagles have looked on really short rest this year like the Thursday night loss at the Giants and the Friday home loss to the Chicago Bears. That leads me to believe the Eagles have been worn down at points this year. The Eagles have looked better this year playing with extra rest. And I think it will really help the line. I think rest is best!” — Clark via Twitter/X
Regardless, it is a bold decision for Philly that they could regret if seeding does not shake out in their favor. However, they are clearly confident in their talent and game planning heading into the postseason – no matter who they match up with in the first game.
