Hours before the Dallas Cowboys kick things off against the New York Giants for their regular-season finale, a report emerged on the future of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

And as expected, following recent comments made by the front office and multiple decisions made in the organization, it should come as no surprise: The Cowboys are expected to make changes on their coaching staff.

Eberflus named the focus of coaching changes

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys “are expected to make changes on their coaching staff” after the season. He added “the defense and DC Matt Eberflus” would be the main focus of such changes.

The report, though not very specific, strongly suggests the Cowboys will move on from Eberflus following Sunday’s matchup. And for those who have been paying attention, it should come as no surprise.

For starters, Jones revealed the last three weeks of the season would play a big part in Eberflus’ evaluation. In the last two weeks, the Cowboys rank 32nd in EPA per play allowed after matchups versus J.J. McCarthy and Josh Johnson.

And then there are the warning signs: For the first time, Eberflus moved from the sideline to the coaching booth in December, which is never a good sign about how things are going. On top of that, Jerry Jones has openly criticized the defense in multiple media appearances, even deflecting concerns about the offense.

“Candidly, to be very upfront about it, I think if we could have gotten this defense in better shape earlier, we could be sitting here with the kind of wins that would have not had us in this tight spot,” Jones said last month.

Last week, Jones said the Cowboys should have played LB Logan Wilson, who had zero defensive snaps on Christmas Day. The coaching staff later described it as a “mistake” in the rotation.

Fourth DC in four years?

If the Cowboys indeed move on from Eberflus in the coming days, it will mean the team’s continuity issues will persist for at least one more year. The Cowboys replaced Dan Quinn with Mike Zimmer in 2024, who was one-and-done before Eberflus’ arrival. If the latter is fired, the Cowboys will be searching for their fourth defensive coordinator in a four-year span.

And yet, Eberflus’ defense isn’t giving the Cowboys much of a choice. Though the front office should carry a large share of the blame for the roster it built in the offseason, the reality is that Eberflus failed to adapt to his players. He also failed to change things up to manufacture pass rush, the absence of which has been a killer for the Cowboys.

Before the decision is announced, though, the Cowboys take on the Giants in MetLife Stadium at noon CT.
