The Tennessee Vols may have a new top transfer linebacker target.
A defensive player just entered the NCAA transfer portal that will likely be of interest to the Tennessee Vols.
Penn State Nittany Lions linebacker Amare Campbell announced on Sunday that he’s entering the transfer portal.
Campbell led Penn State in tackles last season with 103. He also had 9.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
“Unfortunately, once again, I find myself in a situation where I can’t allow myself to be undervalued,” wrote Campbell in a post on Instagram. “I have to do what’s best for my family, my future, and myself.”
Amare Campbell could be a perfect fit for Tennessee
Campbell could quickly become one of the Vols’ top targets in the transfer portal.
The Virginia native started his career at North Carolina after signing with the Tar Heels as a three-star recruit during the 2023 recruiting cycle.
Campbell transferred to Penn State last May. During his lone season at Penn State, Campbell played under new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.
After Campbell’s first practice at Penn State last summer, he was named by Knowles as the “defender of the day.”
“What I saw from Amare was the ability to play in space, and then also inside the box,” said Knowles of Campbell last summer. “So I thought he had a really nice combination of the athletic skills necessary to operate in the open field, but when it came to being tough inside, those are the linebackers that are hard to find. Can they be in space? And then can they defend the straight-ahead run? I saw that on film.”
After Campbell’s first couple of practices at Penn State, Knowles described the former three-star recruit as a “natural linebacker.”
“In two days, I see a lot of natural linebacker skills,” said Knowles. “You don’t see that as much in this day and age of college football because a lot of linebackers are converted from other positions…There’s a skill to playing linebacker that a lot of it is innate and instinctual…a lot of it’s through natural instinct — through things that you can’t teach.”
Baylor transfer linebacker Keaton Thomas was planning to visit Tennessee this upcoming week, but he committed to the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday.
Another one of the Vols’ top transfer linebacker targets is North Carolina linebacker Khmori House, who is expected to visit Tennessee on Sunday.
House has some off-the-field issues, including multiple speeding and reckless driving incidents, that could impact the Vols’ interest in the transfer linebacker.
Tennessee is expected to add one transfer linebacker to the roster this offseason.
