Packers brush aside momentum talk and show real confidence about what’s coming next for this team
Matt LaFleur is still confident about what Green Bay can do in the postseason.
Only four teams in NFL history have made the playoffs with a four-game losing streak to finish out the regular season — the 1986 New York Jets, the 1999 Detroit Lions, the 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers, and the 2025 Green Bay Packers. Those Jets were the most recent ones to win a playoff game, and none of the previous ones has gone beyond the divisional round.
Well, for the Packers, it simply doesn’t matter. The odds might not be great, especially with the impactful injuries — Micah Parsons, Tucker Kraft, and Devonte Wyatt are all out. But head coach Matt LaFleur doesn’t care much about the lack of the so-called momentum — especially because the wild card opponents, the Chicago Bears, are on their own two-game losing streak.
“We’re in the dance, we’ve got to go on the road, and we’re going to have to play our best football moving forward,” LaFleur said after the regular season finale. “[Players] are excited for the challenge and the opportunity, and that’s how we’re going to attack it. That’s our mindset. When you get to the postseason, everybody’s 0-0. It’s a clean slate, so we have an opportunity, and that’s all you can ask for.”
Both sides of the coin
Under Matt LaFleur, the Packers have been on both sides as an example of why being a high seed doesn’t guarantee you anything in the NFL. In 2021, Green Bay was a one-and-done in the postseason as a first seed after losing to the San Francisco 49ers. Back in 2023, the Packers became the first seventh seed ever to win a playoff game by beating the Dallas Cowboys.
“I believe in that locker room,” LaFleur mentioned. “I believe in the talent we have, the players we have, how committed they are, how together they are, and the type of fight we have as a football team.”
Winning playoff games on the road is certainly not an easy challenge. But the Green Bay Packers are confident they can overcome the adversity.
