Sooners landing OL Caleb Nitta in the transfer portal is the perfect addition OU needed for a few different reasons
The Sooners needed a guy like Nitta.
The Oklahoma Sooners urgently need to rebuild their offensive line after losing more than half of their unit to the transfer portal. With the portal window open only until Jan. 16, swift action is crucial. The Sooners responded quickly by landing former Western Kentucky offensive lineman Caleb Nitta, who committed on Monday morning. While Nitta might not be the biggest name available, his addition is strategically significant as Oklahoma works to restore depth and stability to its offensive line.
Sooners landing Nitta in the portal is great news
Getting Nitta, the former Western Kentucky OL, means the Sooners got a depth piece, which they desperately needed. That also means that Oklahoma got a guy who they believe has the potential to translate well to the SEC level.
Most importantly, Nitta offered strong value: as a lesser-known name in the portal, he was likely inexpensive, and the team secured his commitment quickly. He also brings experience facing strong defensive lines, such as Minnesota, while at Virginia Tech and LSU this season.
Jacob Sexton, Logan Howland, Isaiah Autry-Dent, Luke Baklenko, Troy Everett, and Jake Taylor have all transferred. Most were injured all season, but Oklahoma still needs to replace them. The core offensive line remains. Last year, three freshmen anchored the unit and are expected to do so again in 2026.
Michael Fasusi has secured left tackle, while Eddy Pierre-Louis will likely play guard. Ryan Fodje could fill either guard or right tackle. Jake Maikkula is expected to remain the center. The Sooners need one more starter and additional depth.
You don’t always go to the portal to get star players. In fact, more times than not, you go to the portal to fill out your roster with role players, rotational players, or depth guys way down the roster who just want a chance to finish out their careers with a big-time school like Oklahoma.
The Sooners addressed their pressing need by swiftly acquiring an affordable, high-potential depth piece in Nitta. This targeted move strengthens the roster and aligns with Oklahoma’s goal to rebuild the offensive line efficiently.
