For the third straight offseason, the Tennessee Vols could be losing an in-state player to the Miami Hurricanes.

Two years ago, Vols defensive lineman Tyler Baron, a Tennessee native, transferred to Miami for his final season of eligibility.

A year ago, it was Jaboke Thomas, a former Middle Tennessee State transfer from Tullahoma, TN, that left Tennessee for Miami.

This year, it could be Vols EDGE Caleb Herring, who is from Murfreesboro, TN, that could be transferring to Miami.

Caleb Herring is slated to visit the Miami Hurricanes

Herring, who totaled 25 tackles and five sacks while playing in 36 games for the Vols, is transferring after spending the first three seasons of his career at Tennessee.

The decision from Herring coincides with the news that his position coach, LeVorn Harbin, isn’t returning to Tennessee in 2026.

According to 247Sports’ InsideTheU, Herring is scheduled to take a visit to Miami when the Hurricanes return from their College Football Playoff matchup against the Ole Miss Rebels in the Fiesta Bowl (Miami and Ole Miss play on Thursday night).

“Former Tennessee EDGE Caleb Herring tells InsideTheU that he plans to be in Coral Gables on January 9-11 to explore what the program has to offer,” noted InsideTheU’s Gaby Urrutia.

Baron was a fifth round selection by the New York Jets in the 2025 NFL Draft following his lone season at Miami. The former Vol totaled nine tackles in six games as a rookie in 2025 before finishing the season on IR.

Thomas, meanwhile, was a key member of Miami’s secondary in 2025, developing a reputation for being a high energy and hard hitting safety.

Herring likely would’ve had a significant role in Tennessee’s defense in 2026, but he seems content to see if the grass is greener elsewhere.
