The Ohio State Buckeyes started their offseason earlier than they wanted to with a loss in the Cotton Bowl. Since that happened, the Buckeyes have been busy with the transfer portal opening up.

Ohio State’s loss to Miami marked the end of Brian Hartline’s time in Columbus as a coach. The now former Buckeyes assistant is off to South Florida — and Ohio State has already hired a new wide receivers coach with Cortez Hankton.

Ohio State still needs to find its next offensive coordinator — the other half of Hartline’s job title.

Todd Monken could be the next NFL hire for Ryan Day

Day has shown that he can go to the NFL and find a coordinator. Matt Patricia hasn’t been at the college level since the early 2000s before the Buckeyes hired him to be the defensive coordinator. Patricia had a very successful first season in Columbus and now the Buckeyes are working to retain him. Going to the NFL to get the next offensive coordinator makes sense and Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken could be that guy.

The Ravens made a big move to fire John Harbaugh after 18 seasons as the head coach on Tuesday evening — and now Monken is likely out of a job as a result. Monken is receiving NFL head coaching interest, but it’s no sure thing that he will get a job this cycle. If not, the Buckeyes could offer him an attractive job to call plays for them going forward.

Monken was the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs before he joined the Ravens in 2023 — and was there for the two national championships that they had back-to-back. The 59-year-old coach has had past stops at Oklahoma State, LSU, and Southern Miss in his coaching career.

Ohio State could allow Monken to be in a role where he’s just the offensive coordinator and doesn’t have to recruit. If the Buckeyes were to make a move like this, it’d make sense for Keenan Bailey to be the co-offensive coordinator.

When the Buckeyes have been their best, Day has been in a CEO role with two coordinators that he can trust. Bringing in someone like Monken would make that possible for a 2027 season that is going to bring a tough schedule — and high expectations with the final year of Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith together.
