Ohio State football just took a loss they couldn’t afford to the transfer portal – and now they have a glaring hole to fill
The Buckeyes just lost a major talent for their offense.
The Ohio State Buckeyes boast plenty of elite talent, but one of their prized offensive recruits from the 2025 recruiting cycle is planning to test the waters to exit the program.
Former 5-star enters transfer portal to leave Ohio State
According to On3, true freshman 5-star wide receiver Quincy Porter plans to enter the transfer portal. Porter played in just four games this season and brought in four receptions for a total of 59 yards. The Buckeyes have plenty of talent in the pass catching game, but this is still a notable loss to their depth and potential for 2026.
There were just two wide receivers ranked ahead of Porter in his class when it comes to Rivals Industry ranking. It was crystal clear how talent evaluators viewed Porter coming out of high school. Now, the Buckeyes have to replace his potential production quickly.
Checked in with Brandon Little, who covers Ohio State, to get even more insight on Porter’s exit and the hole it leaves on the roster for the Buckeyes.
“Quincy Porter was a 5-star wide receiver in the class of 2025 and many believed that he would be next up in 2026. Carnell Tate just so happened to announce his intentions to enter the draft at the same time that news broke Porter was entering the portal. Ohio State now has a need opposite of Jeremiah Smith — a spot that Porter could have been the favorite to man.
Ohio State has an elite recruit coming in with Chris Henry Jr. and this puts even more pressure on the 6-foot-5 wideout to have to be good right away. The Buckeyes have to hit the portal for a wide receiver addition with Porter leaving the program — and they’ll need to act quickly before talent dries up. With Mylan Graham already hitting the portal as well, the Buckeyes need some growth from the group of Phillip Bell, Bodpegn Miller, and De’Zie Jones next season.” — Brandon Little, A to Z Sports
This news follows WR Carnell Tate’s announcement that he’s entering the 2026 NFL Draft. He’s widely considered to be a first-round pick when April rolls around.
It remains to be seen how active the Buckeyes will be when it comes to WR in the portal market, but this move could cause a chain reaction where they focus a bit more on that position in the coming weeks. Only time will tell. No matter what – this was a loss that Ryan Day and his staff did not want to see.
