The door might be slammed shut on potential Cowboys DC candidate before they even get to talk to him

Raheem Morris is considered a potential candidate to be Cowboys DC. But his schedule suggests it’s going to be tough.

With the Dallas Cowboys looking for a defensive coordinator to replace Matt Eberflus, multiple recently-fired head coaches are expected to be in the mix.

One of them is Raheem Morris, a Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator, who was fired from the Atlanta Falcons after two seasons as head coach. However, the latest intel on Morris is already making him seem like an unlikely candidate.

Morris is drawing serious HC interest

Though Morris to the Cowboys makes sense because he’s a former defensive coordinator, he might be jumping from one head coaching gig to another. So far, Morris already has three confirmed interviews for head coaching vacancies. He’s set to meet with the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.

Morris is clearly seen by NFL circles as a strong HC candidate, which is not a surprise considering his experienced background. And even though the Falcons decided to move on from him after only two years into his tenure, he was one of the most controversial firings of this year’s cycle.

Now granted, with a 37-56 career record as head coach, it’s far from a guarantee Morris will land another opportunity at the top seat this year. But even if he doesn’t, his busy schedule could interfere with the Cowboys’ process.

Timing is also a factor

According to multiple insiders, the Cowboys are expected to move swiftly on their search for a defensive coordinator. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer suggested last weekend that his process to evaluate the team would take 10 to 12 days after the season. Two days into it, he fired Eberflus.

“I think they’ll take about 7-10 days to go through their interview process, and I bet they have a hire by the end of next week,” wrote insider Bobby Belt on social media.

If the Cowboys do want to make a hire quickly, hiring Morris will be a challenge. Naturally, he’ll prioritize head coaching opportunities over defensive coordinator positions, which means Schottenheimer would have to wait around for that process to be over. It could be weeks.

At the minimum, Morris’ busy schedule is a roadblock for him to lead the Cowboys defense.
