The Oklahoma Sooners just can’t stop winning out of the transfer portal, adding ten players on both sides of the ball from across the country, and the portal hasn’t even been open for a full week.

However, the transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal taketh away, and the Sooners have lost an established player on defense mere minutes after landing one out of the portal.

The Sooners already have Sammy Omosigho’s replacement

Losing Omosigho was a bit of a surprise for many, but it appears like the Sooners are embracing a total turnaround in their linebacking corps after losing Kobie McKenzie already to the portal as well as the likely departure of Owen Heinecke.

Even if it is a surprising loss, Oklahoma has already secured his replacement out of the transfer portal. Former Michigan Wolverines linebacker Cole Sullivan chose the Sooners over a return to Michigan on Wednesday morning, likely prompting Omosigho’s departure in the portal. Sullivan was heavily pursued and personally recruited by both Brent Venables and Jim Nagy, speaking highly to just how coveted he was by the Sooners.

Additionally, the Sooners are still optimistic about having Kip Lewis return for the 2026 season. Alongside Sullivan, that’s likely the Sooners’ starting linebacker duo for next year. With a starting role not promised, it makes sense why a player like Omosigho, who has just one year of eligibility left, would look to play elsewhere to vie for an NFL future, even if Oklahoma rotates heavily at linebacker.

Still, this does open up some depth questions for the Sooners. Internally, they do think Taylor Heim is a player primed to take a big leap and could be a big factor for next year, but they’re banking on a lot of development from players without a lot of experience. In the SEC, margins like that matter, so I wouldn’t be shocked if Oklahoma does still try and pursue another option out of the portal just to bolster their rotation.
