Latest NFL bombshell could completely change the Washington Commanders’ offseason plans and the future of the organization
The Commanders have a new possibility to think about after the Ravens fired head coach John Harbaugh, who will be the hottest coaching candidate this offseason.
The Washington Commanders are in their biggest offseason in a long time, and major changes have already taken place.
Head coach Dan Quinn wasted no time firing his right-hand man, Joe Whitt Jr, from his defensive coordinator role once the season ended. He also dropped a shocker at the same time that the Commanders were moving on from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
This is just the beginning of a chaotic offseason, and the latest bombshell could shift the Commanders’ plans entirely. The Baltimore Ravens fired John Harbaugh, and the Commanders need to really think about their options now.
Should the Commanders pursue John Harbaugh?
Quinn’s job seems safe, but there have been rumblings of turmoil going on, and how sure is general manager Adam Peters that Quinn is the guy moving forward? If there’s even a slight doubt, he should at least gauge the interest of Harbaugh and see if he’s interested. It was talked about heading into the final weeks of the regular season, but Harbaugh actually getting hired is a shocker that shakes the entire offseason.
Teams will pivot, and even teams with head coaches on the hot seat have already checked in on Harbaugh. Will the Commanders be one of those teams with a head coach to check in? NFL insiders like Adam Schefter are expecting more to come through because coaches like Harbaugh are rarely available.
Why John Harbaugh should want to come to Washington
The Commanders have already cleaned house and fired both coordinators, so the door is wide open for another head coach if they want to go that route. When is the last time a team fired both coordinators and not the head coach, too, and it worked out? Harbaugh could come in with a franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels, new ownership, a well-respected front office, a new stadium being built, and full control of the coaching staff. Peters has already said that his coaches have a huge hand in building the roster as well, and Harbaugh would have resources and stability.
I’m not saying the Commanders should fire Quinn, but Peters absolutely has to do his due diligence, or he’s not doing his job as a general manager. If you’re going into next season thinking that this is Quinn’s last chance, then why waste another year? Having Harbaugh as the head coach and Todd Monken as the offensive coordinator for Daniels seems like a dream scenario that’s really hard to pass up if it’s a possibility.
