Commanders set to interview two coaches with connections to Washington for David Blough’s first staff as offensive coordinator
David Blough is starting to put together interviews for his first staff with two QB coach candidates to work with Jayden Daniels, who already has a connection to Washington.
The Washington Commanders made the tough decision to move on from Kliff Kingsbury, and had to upgrade at offensive coordinator.
They ended the search earlier than anyone expected, promoting QB coach David Blough to offensive coordinator. That move comes with its own risk, as he’s never run his own offense before or called his own plays.
To have a successful first season, he also needs to build a staff to help, and that’s what he’s doing with the first two interviews for the next QB coach, who has ties to Washington.
Commanders are interviewing D.J. Williams for the QB coach position
Blough has to find his replacement to take over as the next QB coach for Jayden Daniels, and it’s an important hire in his first stint as an offensive coordinator. One of his first interviews is with someone whose name will sound familiar to Commanders fans. The Commanders are set to interview D.J. Williams, who is the son of Washington legend Doug Williams.
Williams has been coaching since 2019 and is currently the QB with the Atlanta Falcons, who are undergoing their own coaching staff changes. He’s worked with Michael Penix Jr, who was selected just six picks after Daniels. Williams will likely be one of the more experienced yet younger options to select from in the coaching cycle, but not the only candidate.
Commanders set to interview Mike Bercovici for QB coach position
The Commanders are continuing a youth trend on the coaching staff by requesting an interview with Panthers assistant QB coach Mike Bercovici, who is just 32 years old. Bercovici is another younger coach who has been highly regarded lately and could be a huge addition as another former QB. He has been a critical part of Bryce Young’s development, having worked with him since his rookie season. We saw Young take a major step forward this season after many were ready to write him off.
Bercovici also already has a notable connection to the Commanders. He played at Arizona State from 2011-2015, then started his coaching career there in 2019, where he worked hands-on with, you guessed it, Jayden Daniels.
Obviously, this is a massive season for Daniels in 2026, and having Blough around will help with continuity, and so could another coach that he’s already worked with. Bercovici was also on the Arizona Cardinals’ coaching staff while Blough was there as a QB in 2022, so Blough knows him well.
