The Dolphins’ front office tear-down continues as Miami has parted ways with another power player from the old regime
Somebody cue up the ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air all alone’ meme.
You’d certainly expect some change within your front office once you make a change at the top of the organizational charts. We’re seeing that play out in real time with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins agreed to terms and hired former Packers executive Jon-Eric Sullivan for their general manager position last Friday, closing what was a two-month window with an interim GM holding serve. The whole process started when Miami dismissed Chris Grier at the end of October. But what’s taken place hasn’t just been treading water.
The Dolphins, under the direction of interim GM Champ Kelly, parted ways with both of the team’s co-directors of player personnel just two weeks later. Adam Engroff and Anthony Hunt were with the team longer than Grier and were considered to be the lieutenants to Miami’s scouting efforts. On Tuesday, they were joined by another power player from the old regime to split with the Dolphins in the days after Sullivan’s hiring.
The Dolphins continue to tear out the remnants of their old front office
Assistant general manager Marvin Allen has joined the ranks of executives to be ousted from Miami in the past few months. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini was first with the news that Allen, who had been with the Dolphins and served in the role of Grier’s assistant general manager since 2019, had split with the team.
Folks wanting major changes to how the Dolphins conduct business and identify talent can rejoice — you’re getting exactly that. It could pose some challenges for an essential draft preparation this spring, however. Interruptions to workflow, communications, and criteria for players mid-cycle can create risk. It’s something Sullivan, the holdovers from Miami’s old guard and whatever new executives spring up in Miami in the days, weeks, and months ahead will need to be mindful of.
It likely sets the stage for the former interim GM, Champ Kelly, to stay on staff in a vital role bridging the old guard into this new front office effort. Kelly, who arrived in Miami in March of last year, shared an emotional post on Instagram after being passed over for the full-time position but did include the following clue to staying with the Dolphins:
“I told them not to worry.
This didn’t mean we had to move.”
Either way, Allen makes four prominent executives to be shown the door since October. Change is coming to the Dolphins on every front, including the ones we don’t see in the day-to-day.
