The Pittsburgh Steelers will cast the widest net we have ever seen as they search for their next head coach for the first time in almost two decades. There are plenty of head coaching candidates to be on the lookout for following Mike Tomlin’s bombshell decision.

However, the Steelers have been eyeing one particular candidate for weeks in preparation for a potential Tomlin departure, and he checks all the boxes, to say the least.

Steelers have been doing homework on Rams DC Chris Shula

“Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula is one name I heard for the Steelers about a month ago, as someone they’d kept an eye on in case a day like today came,” posted Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated on X/Twitter following Mike Tomlin’s resignation.

It appears the Steelers have been preparing for this moment for some time, and it makes sense. You don’t just wake up the morning after a 30-6 loss when you have coached at a place for 19 years and decide not coach anymore.

“Mike indicated that he did not anticipate coaching, at least not in the near future,” said Steelers owner Art Rooney II on Tuesday via the Steelers YouTube channel. “I think he wants to spend time with his family and do some of the kinds of things he hasn’t been able to do for the last many, many years. And so, if something like that comes up, we’ll deal with it when it comes up. But right now that doesn’t seem to be on his radar.”

Shula fits the mold of what the Steelers have hired in the past. He’s a young, up-and-coming defensive mind who just so happens to be the grandson of one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport, Don Shula.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers get out of their comfort zone this cycle, but there is reason to believe that Shula could be the next head man wearing black and gold on the Steelers’ sidelines come September.
