Sooners will get to see what could have been with one 2025 player who couldn’t stay healthy but transferred to a rival
The Sooners will miss Troy Everett as an amazing leader and center.
The Oklahoma Sooners have rebuilt their offensive line beyond four returning starters: Michael Fasusi, Ryan Fodje, Eddy Pierre-Louis, and Jake Maikkula. They’ve lost nearly everyone else in those position groups, including center Troy Everett, a key leader who struggled with injuries.
On Tuesday, Everett committed to the Ole Miss Rebels, OU’s newest SEC rival, via the transfer portal. This development adds intrigue to the matchup between the two programs: as SEC members, Ole Miss is 2-0 against OU in conference games. Now, the Sooners will have even more of a reason to beat the Rebels in 2026.
Everett will be missed by OU, but the fit is perfect for Ole Miss
In 2024, Everett was OU’s highest-graded pass blocker among players with at least 25 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. He logged 243 pass blocking snaps and nearly 200 run blocking snaps. Among linemen with at least 100 run blocking snaps, Everett ranked fifth on the team with a 62.8 PFF grade.
He will be missed in a few ways. When he’s healthy, Everett is a good football player. But that is his issue — he’s almost never healthy. He missed nearly the entire 2025 season, playing just 39 total snaps. Given these circumstances, it was time for a fresh start and a change for Everett. Sometimes, that’s all a player needs.
OU will miss his play when healthy, but they’ll also miss his leadership. Even when injured this past season, Everett was essentially the voice of the offensive line in the locker room. That level of leadership is hard to replace.
Now with Ole Miss, a team that nearly made the National Championship, Everett will have an opportunity to start for a contender in what’s likely his last season. While Oklahoma will certainly feel his absence, ultimately, this move seems best for both parties.
