The New York Giants’ aggressive push to hire former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is heating up. The latest positive sign is that the Giants have landed the first interview with Harbaugh, which will take place today.

Per the Athletic’s Ian O’Connor, it’s expected to be an all-hands-on-deck meeting for courting the former Super Bowl-winning head coach. The national media commentary this morning has emphasized the importance of the Giants securing the first meeting of the week for Harbaugh.

Can the Giants keep Harbaugh in the building?

Landing the first interview with a top head coaching candidate during his recruitment is a massive green flag for this process. It’s been heavily reported that the Giants were doing everything possible to land Harbaugh, and it’s now clear they’ve broken through.

It isn’t a guarantee that Harbaugh will become the Giants’ future head coach. He could theoretically decide to still take his remaining visits to get a full scope of his options. But having that initial pitch to make an impactful first impression could ultimately sway his decision.

The detailed reporting on the Giants’ side has also been a positive sign for this process as well. Throughout, there has been far more information coming out about how badly he’s wanted in New York. An example of this is a recent post by The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor, who reported that Harbaugh communicated his interest in the job emphatically.

Hopefully, landing this opening meeting sets up the Giants to keep him from leaving the building without signing a contract. Of the three jobs that Harbaugh is considering, between the Giants, Atlanta Falcons, and Tennessee Titans, the Giants present the most upside.

Atlanta does not have a 2026 first-round pick and has a young, struggling quarterback coming off a serious knee injury. That situation doesn’t exactly foster security and could lead to trouble in Harbaugh’s first year.

Cam Ward makes the Titans’ job intriguing, but Tennessee is multiple years behind the Giants in the roster-building process. They do not have nearly the same level of pieces as New York’s core of Malik Nabers, Andrew Thomas, Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, and Abdul Carter. Aside from Jeffrey Simmons, the Titans are average to below average at every position group.

This situation is snowballing fast, so we’ll see what comes of it after the meeting concludes.
