Former Ohio State football star sets the record straight on potential Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator candidate from the NFL

It’s likely that the Buckeyes aren’t a fit for the NFL coach.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have made one key hire this offseason by replacing Brian Hartline with former LSU wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton.

Ohio State acted quickly to make that happen right after its season ended against Miami in the College Football Playoff. Since then, it has been all about managing the transfer portal. Ohio State has lost north of 30 players and has brought in just under half of that. With the portal window closed for the most part, Ohio State will likely turn its attention to finding its next offensive coordinator.

Former Ohio State star sets the record straight on one potential possibility at offensive coordinator

Ohio State’s open offensive play-caller position has been connected to multiple names in the NFL ranks. A lot of that had to do with Ryan Day’s success in bringing in Matt Patricia for the defense. One name out there is former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, but that shouldn’t be looked at as too realistic.

“I don’t think that that’s a real thing,” former Buckeye Bobby Carpenter said recently. “He’s not coming here. I’m not saying he’s a good coach. I don’t know if that’s really a fit for what Ohio State’s trying to do. I’m not sure that’s really something he’d want to do — to go be an offensive coordinator in college at this point.”

Carpenter is spot on here. The likelihood that McDaniel makes the track to the college ranks is low. McDaniel was fired by the Dolphins recently after four seasons as their head coach. Still, he’s in high regard around the NFL as an offensive mind, and he will have a chance to land a new job soon.

McDaniel has a second interview with the Cleveland Browns next week for their open head coaching gig — and he’s had interest from multiple other teams with openings. McDaniel has also interviewed with the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their offensive coordinator openings.

Being 42 and still having plenty of interest from the NFL decreases the chances of him coming to the college ranks. McDaniel has spent the majority of his career at the NFL level, with no college experience. That’d be a big change for McDaniel, even if he wasn’t given any recruiting responsibilities.
