Colts are one step closer to losing an important piece of their coaching staff after latest news
The Colts made the correct, but tough, decision to do right by Jim Bob Cooter, allowing him to interview for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator position.
Recent NFL news revealed the decision the Indianapolis Colts made on an interesting subject ahead of the offseason.
Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles requested to interview Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter for the same position on their staff. Because this was a lateral move for Cooter, the Colts had the option to block this interview to ensure he stays in Indianapolis.
That’s not the route the team chose, though. Cooter interviewed for the position on Saturday, meaning the Colts let him pursue the opportunity. This may shock some people, but it makes sense when you look at the facts.
Colts grant Jim Bob Cooter chance to interview to become a play-caller as the Eagles’ OC
The main reason Cooter would prefer the Eagles’ offensive coordinator job to the Colts’ is the fact that he would get the chance to be the play caller. If he goes there and finds a way to fix Philadelphia’s offense, it would put him on a fast track to becoming a head coach. The last two successful play callers for the Eagles went on to be hired as head coaches elsewhere: Shane Steichen (Colts) and Kellen Moore (New Orleans Saints).
Steichen and Cooter have a close relationship on and off the field, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the Colts let Cooter take the interview. By NFL rule, it may be a lateral move, but it’s easy to see why this would be a better opportunity for Cooter in the short and long term.
Just because he took the interview doesn’t mean he will land the job, though. It is considered one of the top jobs on the market for coaches seeking an offensive coordinator position. If I had to guess, they would prefer to land someone with recent NFL experience calling plays.
However, maybe Cooter’s past working relationship with Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni and his knowledge of Steichen’s system give him a leg up on the competition.
