Bears begin a pivotal offseason already ahead of the curve by having two things that most teams lack and it bodes well for Chicago’s future
The Chicago Bears have their guy at head coach and quarterback.
The end of an NFL season can be a hard time for many organizations when it comes to facing the hard realities that are ahead, and we’ve seen teams make difficult decisions this year at a much higher rate compared to previous years.
We’re continuing to see long-time, successful, head coaches get let go, leaving teams scrambling to find the right candidate to lead an organization into the future. The same thing goes with the quarterback position with the majority of the league still struggling to find their leader on the field.
As the Chicago Bears get set to enter into a pivotal offseason following the team’s divisional round playoff loss, there’s comfort in knowing the Bears have those two pieces in place and it’ll make a lot of other decisions a lot easier for this team in the coming months.
Stability that comes with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams is a major advantage for Chicago
Starting with Ben Johnson, it’s hard to find a better head coach around the league right now. He has quickly built a strong, winning, culture in that Bears locker room and earned a unique level of trust from his players and fellow assistants.
Johnson would easily be my selection for AP Coach of the Year and it has nothing to do with Chicago bias. He has transformed this team in one year and the words of his players speak for itself.
“He has been the catalyst for us,” quarterback Caleb Williams said of Johnson. “To be able to lead us and to be able to stand strong in tough moments and good moments. To be able to show emotion and to be who he is and be consistent with that and do what he said he was going to do. He’s been everything that Chicago has needed as a coach. We’re happy to have him and I’m happy to have him as my coach and what he’s been able to do for me. It’s unparalleled. I’m excited about that, that we’re going to be able to be together. I’m excited about our future.”
Finding the right coach is step one, and the Bears have their guy in Johnson who is more than capable of leading this team into the future. The next step is having the right quarterback, and the Bears believe they have that as well in Williams.
“That guy, he’s special,” veteran defensive lineman Grady Jarrett said of Williams. “I’m so excited to have him as my quarterback, and it’s just the beginning for him, man. I mean, that fight, the resiliency, and just the raw talent, and the belief, I think the sky is the limit for him. We are so proud of him.”
After the disappointing loss, Johnson added his own high praise for Williams noting his “clutch” play-making ability and added that he’s only going to use this result as fuel to get even better.
Other players are going to pay attention to what’s going on in Chicago
Come free agency time, other players are going to be paying attention to what the Bears are building with Johnson and Williams as the pillars of this organization and they’re going to want to be a part of it.
“They have a franchise quarterback, and that’s the hardest thing to find,” Bears All-Pro safety and pending free agent Kevin Byard said. “That’s going attract people to come here.”
Having a strong head coach and quarterback locked in place certainly makes Chicago a desirable place and the Bears showed off what this organization can become this season. That alone makes the next couple of months a lot easier to process and helps the Bears get a hot start to the offseason.
