Miami Hurricanes defensive back Jakobe Thomas was one of two former Tennessee Vols players on the field Monday night during the College Football Playoff championship game.

Thomas, who started his career at Middle Tennessee State before transferring to Tennessee in 2024, landed with Miami ahead of the 2025 season.

Former Vols tight end Holden Staes, who started his career at Notre Dame before also transferring to Tennessee in 2024, joined the Indiana Hoosiers this past offseason.

Indiana knocked off Miami 27 to 21 on Monday night to claim the program’s first national championship.

Jakobe Thomas went viral twice during the national championship game

Thomas, the defensive MVP of Miami’s win over the Ole Miss Rebels in the Fiesta Bowl, went viral twice during the Hurricanes’ loss to the Hoosiers.

The former Vol was nearly ejected in the first half against Indiana after he delivered a vicious helmet to helmet hit on Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

Mendoza suffered a busted lip as a result of the hit.

Thomas also went viral after the game when he was consoled by Miami head coach Mario Cristobal.

It was a heck of a season for Thomas and the Hurricanes, but this was Indiana’s tournament. The Hoosiers were the best team all season, and they’re certainly a deserving champion.

Still, the moment between Thomas and Cristobal is a reminder of how much these players pour into the sport.
