The truth about Sean McDermott’s firing has finally come to light after explosive comments from NFL insider
An inside look at the dealings within One Bills Drive.
There just hasn’t been much information from the Buffalo Bills on the firing of Sean McDermott. The information they have provided includes a typo in the owner’s departure message for McDermott and a promotion for Brandon Beane after a heartbreaking end to the season in the divisional round.
With fans desperate for answers, Ian Rapoport spoke about what went down at One Bills Drive.
Ian Rapoport opens up about Sean McDermott’s firing
“My understanding is McDermott himself had some questions about how much talent the Bills had. I’m not sure that sat well in the building, considering most teams believe they are stocked full of talent,” Rapoport said.
“The Bills wanted a new leader. I’m not sure what wholesale changes there will be to what the Bills do, but they wanted a new leader, deciding that Sean McDermott was not the coach for them moving forward. Now it is a new day in Buffalo, with no doubt, one of the most coveted openings still unfilled.”
McDermott isn’t without faults, like the 13-second collapse against the Kansas City Chiefs, or the repeated poor defensive efforts in the postseason throughout his career. Although the blame doesn’t and shouldn’t rest solely on his shoulders. Nevertheless, he’s gone after a successful career in Buffalo, outside of winning the whole thing. He changed the culture and what it means to be a Buffalo Bill.
“The Buffalo Bills did not reach the Super Bowl, playoffs every year, AFC East titles seemingly every year,” Rapoport said. “A team that went from nowhere to respectability. But the fact that Sean McDermott, with Josh Allen, with all of those weapons, and so much talent on defense, could not get to where they needed to go.”
Weeks in the making, according to Rapoport
The decision to part ways with McDermott started brewing weeks ago. It truly felt like Super Bowl, or there would be some kind of change in Western New York. Buffalo is trying to win a Super Bowl, and after years of trying the same thing, the team is looking in a new direction.
“Could not get to the Super Bowl. Could not take to the next step,” Rapoport said. “Certainly something that directly contributed to owner Terry Pegula making the decision that Sean McDermott should be out. Now make no mistake, this is something that has been weeks coming with Sean McDermott being the head man for several seasons.”
For better or worse, the McDermott era has officially come to a close. What comes next will surely define the Bills far more than what just ended. With Allen still in his prime and expectations higher than ever, this hire can’t be safe, familiar, or comfortable. Buffalo didn’t move on just to make a change; it did it to hopefully finally finish the job.
McDermott wasn’t perfect, and he may not have ever delivered a Super Bowl, but he delivered and built something that Buffalo hadn’t seen in decades: sustained relevance, accountability, culture, and belief. He helped turn Buffalo into a contender and raised the standard at One Bills Drive. As the Bills turn the page, they do so standing on the foundation that McDermott helped build.
