Bills’ Keon Coleman gets an incredible gift from former NFL star that could completely change his career
Young receiver Keon Coleman still has time to turn things around in the NFL.
The Buffalo Bills and wide receiver Keon Coleman have a strained relationship, it seems. During the press conference discussing the firing of former head coach Sean McDermott, owner Terry Pegula blamed McDermott and the coaching staff for drafting Coleman.
“Can I interrupt?” Pegula asked. “The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon.”
It hasn’t been a good week or a good season for Coleman.
Chad Johnson offers to help Keon Coleman in the offseason
That’s not to say Coleman can’t turn things around, and he just received an incredible gift from a former All-Pro wide receiver that could change the trajectory of his career. Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson, or Chad Ochocinco, offered to work with Coleman in the offseason.
“They will NEVER be able to say (expletive) about him again & will eat their words after we train together this offseason,” Johnson said.
Over his 11-year career with both the Bengals and the New England Patriots, Johnson totalled 766 receptions for 11,059 yards and 67 TDs while adding 24 carries for 175 yards on the ground. While his career differed from Coleman’s, with Johnson really coming into his own by his second season, he has valuable insight that could benefit the Bills’ receiver.
After a strong offseason filled with promise and even offensive lineman Dion Dawkins claiming the league better get ready, Coleman struggled in his second year in Buffalo. From disciplinary actions taken against him to being a healthy scratch, Coleman left much to be desired with his performance.
The second-year receiver was always going to be a project, and the Buffalo Bills would be wise to give him some more time to develop, unless an intriguing trade comes through that they simply can’t ignore. Coleman finished his sophomore season with 38 receptions for 404 yards and four TDs.
Pegula’s words come back to bite him after throwing Coleman under the bus
Pegula claimed that general manager Brandon Beane essentially went ahead with the selection because it was what the team and coaching staff wanted.
Videos surfaced quickly after showing Beane being ecstatic that Coleman was selected, both after running the 40-yard dash and right before the draft.
If anything, the resurfaced videos only add another uncomfortable layer to Pegula’s disastrous press conference. With Beane clearly thrilled about the pick at the time, the attempt to redirect blame feels premature at best and unfair at worst.
If Coleman does take a leap, especially with help from one of the league’s most accomplished receivers, those words from ownership may linger far longer than intended.
