The Cleveland Browns are expected to name a new head coach very soon and they’ve already been hit with what may seem like bad news on Monday morning.

Another candidate has pulled out of the Browns’ search for a new head coach, and it may not mean what you think.

Grant Udinski pulling out of Browns’ search for a new head coach could mean big news is coming

According to Tom Pellissero, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski has pulled out of contention for the Browns head coaching job. This comes after Udinski had a second interview for the job on Friday, then met with the Buffalo Bills over the weekend.

Udinski going through two interviews and pulling out of the job on the same day that the Browns’ top leaders are in Los Angeles visiting with Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase is quite the coincidence.

Cleveland has been hot on Scheelhaase since they fired Kevin Stefanski over three weeks ago. The Browns have been unable to get an in-person interview done due to the Rams still being in the postseason. Los Angeles getting eliminated by the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday evening was good for the Browns.

Scheelhaase exercises the second part of fulfilling the Rooney Rule for the Browns. It’s possible that the Browns still hire defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, as he’s the other top candidate to land the job.

Udinski removing himself from contention this late in the process may look like it’s him telling the Browns no. However, it’s more likely that the Browns have their guy in mind already and Udinski’s camp is aware of that.

Just remember, it looks better for it to appear that you denied the job, instead of being denied.
