The Cleveland Browns have wrapped up their head coaching decision after 23 days searching to replace Kevin Stefanski.

After having three final candidates for the job, the Browns are hiring a familiar but unexpected face.

Todd Monken to be the next head coach in Cleveland

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns are hiring former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken to be the team’s next head coach. Monken was also the offensive coordinator in Cleveland during the 2019 season and now gets his first shot as a head coach.

Monken is days away from being 60 years old and was the least talked about of the three head coaching candidates. Cleveland flew to Los Angeles on Monday to interview Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase a second time and he was the early week favorite for the job.

The Browns get a head coach who has a history of designing successful offenses at both the college and pro levels. Monken was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC from 2016-18, and spent the last three years with the Baltimore Ravens at the same role. He’s had success with the quarterback position and that’s been Cleveland’s biggest Achilles heel.

Cleveland notably wants to keep Jim Schwartz in place, which would give the club two of its head coaching candidates on the staff. The Browns would then keep the head coach of their defense intact and have a new offensive mind to try to rejuvenate the weak point of the team.

There’s no question that this hire was the surprise of the three possibilities. Attention now turns to what Schwartz wants to do.
