The Alabama Crimson Tide wasted no time making changes after the season ended with a disappointing loss to Indiana.

The transfer portal opened up immediately after Alabama saw its season come to an end, and it was time to move forward. A lot of key players hit the portal to head to other programs, and head coach Kalen DeBoer had to pivot and regroup. One unit that saw the most turnover was the defensive line, and some fans were concerned about all the changes.

Not DeBoer, though, he’s fired up about the changes they made and actually thinks they upgraded in more than one way.

Kalen DeBoer loves the changes Alabama made on the defensive line

Changes come with a lot of uncertainty, but sometimes changes are needed to move forward, and everyone can agree that upgrades needed to happen. Alabama saw key players like Keon Keeley and Qua Russaw hit the portal, and they needed to replace them, while also upgrading. DeBoer had a clear vision of what he wanted on the defensive line, and he couldn’t hold back his excitement when asked about the upgrades this offseason.

“I’m fired up about that group,” DeBoer said fired up about what those guys bring, both the returners and then also the newcomers that come in. I think we got longer, we got bigger. I think we got more athletic. I think we got some guys that are both in the program and guys that have come into it, that really care, not just about, you know, what they can do personally and for themselves, but also care about being a great teammate. So again, captain type, caliber people that are coming into the program.”

Alabama made huge additions to the defensive line

Getting Yhonzae Pierre back was a massive domino to fall for Alabama’s defense, as he easily could’ve been a top-75 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. DeBoer needed to add more support around him, however, and he did on the inside and outside. The Crimson Tide landed Desmond Umeozulu, who is a 6-6, 250-pound EDGE rusher that will bring a lot of that size and length DeBoer talked about. Caleb Smith is another defensive end they added from the portal at 6-5, 270 pounds, who can set the edge and get to the quarterback.

The Crimson Tide also beefed up the interior of the line with high-upside players in Terrance Green and Kedrick Bingley-Jones, while Devan Thompkins can play inside and outside at 6-5, 290 pounds. DeBoer took a swing at potential and leadership, and Crimson Tide fans should be just as excited as he is about the defensive line in 2026. The defensive line needs to stop the run at a higher rate than last year and get to the quarterback early and often.
