The cat is out of the bag with the Las Vegas Raiders and who they prefer as their new head coach.

According to Ian Rappoport of NFL Media, Broncos quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator Davis Webb has withdrawn from consideration for the Raiders’ head coaching job. Webb is reportedly preparing for a possible promotion within the Broncos under Sean Payton. This could suggest he either doubted his chances with the Raiders or saw more value in staying with Denver, as it is not common to choose a coordinator role without play-calling responsibilities over a head coaching position.

With Webb out of the running, it is apparent that the Raiders are focused on Klint Kubiak as their next head coach. Whether Kubiak chooses the Raiders or the Arizona Cardinals remains uncertain, but he is now the only remaining candidate in Las Vegas. The franchise has one more meeting with him this weekend, after which their direction should be clear.

Kubiak is the best head coach option available, but he does have his flaws

The good news is the Raiders are taking a deliberate approach to ensure the right choice. After almost annual searches in the last five years, this decision carries extra weight, as the next head coach is expected to get a real chance—more than just a single season—to rebuild the franchise.

It’s also promising that the Raiders’ finalists bring major strengths from recent success. Kubiak, for instance, led one of the league’s top offenses this year and brings experience from coaching a Super Bowl team. His offense was elite, though there are some downsides.

Kubiak has been in the NFL for 12 years, and this is his first major success. How will his offense and team look without the perfect pieces? In Seattle, the roster fits perfectly on both sides of the ball. In Las Vegas, you won’t have that right away.

There will be some growing pains with the Raiders and Kubiak. However, this is what has to be done at this point.
