Former Alabama commit takes unnecessary shot at Crimson Tide after flipping to SEC rival, and what he said was wrong
Texas RB Hollywood Smothers took a shot at Alabama when explaining why he flipped from the Crimson Tide to the Longhorns.
The Alabama Crimson Tide came up short this season of winning a National Championship, but it showed it belonged after just making the College Football Playoff and beating the Oklahoma Sooners on the road.
The team had to reload in the offseason, however, and attack the transfer portal to prepare for another run in 2026. The Crimson Tide signed an impressive class from the transfer portal, but one player flipped his commitment to another SEC school. After committing to Alabama, running back Hollywood Smothers changed his mind and soon flipped to Texas, and his reason couldn’t have been more wrong.
RB Hollywood Smothers takes a shot at Alabama in his reasoning for flipping to Texas
Players flip all the time, but Smothers was locked in with the Crimson Tide, then rumblings started to come out about Texas pushing him to flip to the Longhorns, and of course, he did. Smothers detailed his reasoning for the flip to Pete Nakos with ON3, and he took a shot at Alabama in the process.
“NIL didn’t play a big factor for me…I honestly just want to win, and I feel like we are in the best position to go win it all with the talent and depth at Texas.”
Smothers would then go on to say that Texas had a bigger emphasis on trying to win a National Championship and that the Longhorns would be more prepared to do so.
“Returning the potential No. 1 overall pick at QB, and Alabama was losing their starter to the draft and a lot of pieces to the NFL or portal in the wide receiver room,” Smothers said. “Texas just seemed like they had players in place to go on a run, and an offensive-minded coach who knows how to scheme his weapons open in the run and pass game. “What separated things for me was Texas’ emphasis on going to win it all. Feeling like they shouldn’t have been counted out last year in the playoffs.”
The Alabama standard will always be a National Championship or bust
The Crimson Tide made the College Football Playoff, unlike Texas, and its season ended against Indiana, which ended up winning it all. Texas ended its season by beating Michigan in the Citrus Bowl and finished 10-3. The standard may not have been met this season, but the standard remains the same.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer actually spoke recently about building championship habits, and that’s exactly what Alabama is doing.
Smothers is right about the roster the Longhorns have after adding Cam Coleman and getting Arch Manning back for one more season, but we have seen Texas underperform year after year. Anything short of a National Championship should be a disappointment for both teams, so his reasoning makes no sense at all.
