The NFL offseason is in full swing, and the Washington Commanders are set to make multiple roster changes this offseason in free agency and the NFL Draft.

The Commanders also made a multitude of changes to the coaching staff, which will impact how players fit on the roster. General manager Adam Peters is set to have a top-5 salary cap room for the Commanders’ offseason, and the latest NFL news made life easier for moves they’ll have to make.

The NFL is expecting a major salary cap boost this offseason

Business is booming for the NFL, and the numbers show it with a projected boost coming for teams this offseason. The salary cap is expected to hit over $300 million for the first time in NFL history. This is a major jump from what the projected numbers were expected to be.

People will think this means that teams will have more money to spend, but in reality, it just means teams will pay more for free agents who are hitting the market. The real benefit will come to teams looking to pay their current players in-house before they hit free agency. This could help the Commanders keep any players they want, but also make one big offseason extension.

How the Commanders will benefit from the salary cap increase

We don’t know exactly how much salary cap space the Commanders will have until the numbers are finalized, but Over The Cap has them sitting at $71.4 million with the projected base salary cap set at $303,500,00.

The Commanders are set to have 33 free agents this offseason, and as nice as it would be to upgrade all of them, it’s just not realistic, and they’ll have to keep a good amount of them. The salary cap increase will help them retain the players they want and keep them from testing the market. Players like Chris Paul and Jacob Martin would be ideal candidates to be retained, and veteran QB Marcus Mariota will have a market with a weak QB draft.

This also helps the Commanders situate themselves through Laremy Tunsil’s extension this offseason, which should be the top priority before free agency even gets close enough. Tunsil already reworked his contract, which helped pave the way for a long-term deal. Peters spoke after the season about how important it was to him to get a deal done, and he learned a lot from the Terry McLaurin holdout last year.

The salary cap increase is definitely a huge benefit, but not in the way a lot of fans will think. The money will be used more in-house to get ready for free agency, where they can take the swings they want, and expect those contracts to be even more inflated this offseason.
