The Washington Commanders made a lot of coaching changes this offseason, and they’re heading into the next season with two new coordinators

The changes come with a lot of unknowns, especially with David Blough and Daronte Jones both getting their first NFL coordinator positions. Having experienced assistant coaches on the staff can help the transition to a new team or help get acclimated with the new job.

Blough might lose one of those assistant coaches who would help him a ton after Brian Johnson interviewed for a top offensive coordinator role.

Brian Johnson interviews for the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator position

Johnson is currently the Commanders’ assistant head coach and offensive passing game coordinator, and losing him would be a pretty notable loss. We didn’t know what to expect from Johnson after he was passed up by Blough as the new offensive coordinator, and he finally had an important interview for his own opportunity. Johnson has interest from the Denver Broncos, and he recently interviewed for their offensive coordinator position.

Johnson has experience as an offensive coordinator in college, as well as for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, before joining Washington. It was expected that he would garner interest from around the league with so many openings elsewhere, but it remains unknown if he will end up leaving. If he does, that’s another key hire the Commanders will need to land to replace him.

The Commanders are extremely young on their offensive staff

The Commanders have a critical season coming up where quarterback Jayden Daniels needs to have a bounce-back year and stay healthy, and he’ll be doing so with a new offensive coordinator in Blough. Blough went from assistant QB coach to QB coach, and now to offensive coordinator, in a matter of just a few months. He’s never called plays or run his own offense before, so it will be a brand new challenge for him. He also has a young QB coach coming in with D.J. Williams taking over, and a first-time coach in Danny Etling as the new assistant QB coach.

It’s also unknown if veteran coach Anthony Lynn will stick around after receiving several head coaching interviews that have already been filled, but he would be the last one remaining if Johnson leaves. Luckily, Daniels is an experienced QB who knows how to give feedback and help lead on and off the field as well.
