Latest report sheds new light on how the Lions took advantage of a recently fired GM who overplayed his hand
Why did the Vikings do this? What were they thinking?
Earlier on Monday, we wrote a story about how Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes lost a good trade partner within the NFC North when the Minnesota Vikings fired Kewsi Adofo-Mensah.
One of the big moves Adofo-Mensah helped the Lions make was trading up to the 12th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to select Jameson Williams. Well, another layer of that onion has shown itself this week.
The Vikings wanted to draft Jameson Williams before they traded the Lions the pick they used to draft Jameson Williams
Minnesota Star Tribune Vikings beat writer Ben Goessling reported over the weekend that a source told him the Vikings intended to draft Williams had they kept the 12th pick.
I cannot understand why the Vikings didn’t just take Williams if they had planned to. Perhaps they had talked themselves into the idea that Williams would fall to the 32nd pick? That would have been quite a drop.
The Vikings used the 32nd pick they got from the Lions to draft Lewis Cine. They used the 34th pick to trade down and draft linebacker Brian Asamoah. Cine now plays for the DC Defenders in the UFL, and Asamoah plays for the Bengals. The Vikings drafted Jordan Addison the next year.
At the end of the day, the Lions fleeced the Vikings. Did Holmes trick Adofo-Mensah into thinking he wouldn’t take Williams? Seriously, what happened? Why didn’t the Vikings just take the guy they wanted to take? It’s just weird. And it likely contributed significantly to why the Vikings moved on from him.
