Former NFL All-Pro throws major shade at Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders for his Pro Bowl accomplishment
Shedeur Sanders being named to the Pro Bowl has folks upset, including a former All-Pro.
The Cleveland Browns ended up with a Pro Bowl quarterback, and I’m sure no one had that coming after how their 2025 season went.
Shedeur Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl as one of three quarterbacks after several opt-outs and with New England Patriots QB Drake Maye playing in the Super Bowl. Sanders joined former Browns QB Joe Flacco and Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow as the AFC’s Pro Bowl quarterbacks.
Sanders getting the nod for the Pro Bowl has come with plenty of opinions from the outside.
Former All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu has a problem with Shedeur Sanders in the Pro Bowl
Tyrann Mathieu had a standout career in the NFL for 12 seasons as a safety with time spent with the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and New Orleans Saints. Mathieu was named to three Pro Bowls in his career and doesn’t see why Sanders is being named to his first.
“We can not reward mediocrity. We can not reward it, I’m sorry,” Mathieu said on the In The Bayou podcast. “Like if you got more interceptions than touchdowns there’s no way you should be rewarded.”
Sanders finished with seven starts for the Browns and had seven passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions during that time. The rookie fifth-round pick threw for 1,400 yards while completing 56.6 percent of his passes. Sanders lost one fumble on the season.
In a traditional year, there’s next to no chance that Sanders is a Pro Bowler. Being named to the Pro Bowl this season is more of an indictment of what the Pro Bowl has become. A player like New York Jets QB Justin Fields turning down the Pro Bowl just goes to show.
Sanders had some bright spots during his rookie season, but also struggled mightily at times. Being named to a Pro Bowl was a major surprise, but it can also be a confidence boost for the quarterback heading into his second season.
The NFL naming Sanders to the Pro Bowl was always going to get a reaction due to the popularity he has. Perhaps the NFL knew that too.
