The Vols’ star had an unfortunate injury over the summer, and it should be no surprise who caused it.

Tennessee forward Nate Ament has been finding himself at the postgame press conference table more and more in recent weeks. A natural result of becoming a rising star in the sport as February gets underway.

Ament’s had some amusing moments in the last few days, including on Saturday night went he broke down laughing talking about Steven Pearl’s comments about his teammates DeWayne Brown II and Jaylen Carey as defensive ends.

“Nah, it’s really true,” Ament said while laughing. “In practice when I’m playing the four, I’ve got to guard him (Brown) and stuff like that. It’s tough, man. He’s just (laughs). Yeah, it’s true. It’s true.”

About Carey being a defensive end — and he absolutely is built like one at 6’8″, 267 pounds — he just so happens to be the team’s “enforcer” on the floor, which was evident on Tuesday night against Ole Miss.

After Bishop Boswell took an elbow to the face that resulted in a flagrant foul, Carey took exception and got into a brief scrum with Ole Miss’s James Scott, with both players earning technical fouls.

After the game, Ament confirmed Carey as the team’s enforcer, and he revealed that Carey is the one who injured his wrist during practice back during the summer.

“That’s our bodyguard,” Ament said. “That’s our team bodyguard right there. He likes to get in fights and stuff like that, so it is what it is — nah, I’m just joking. Yeah, he’s like our enforcer. To know that someone like that is going to have my back, it’s incredible. He broke my wrist in the summer. I tried to dunk on him, and that’s a whole different story. But yeah, he’s our enforcer, and I know he’s got my back all the time.”

Ament suffered a wrist injury in July during practice and was sidelined, per Rick Barnes, a couple of weeks with the injury.

Now, we know it’s because Ament felt the wrath of the team’s enforcer. Or bodyguard. Perhaps the latter is the better description, because it’s clear that Carey will stick his nose in there against an opponent to make sure no one is disrespecting his players.
