The transition period continues for the Philadelphia Eagles. The latest coaching staff news, however, isn’t necessarily a good update for the future of the offense.

Instead, there is a new mist of uncertainty around the offensive line following direct news from an experienced, well-respected assistant.

Eagles lose another key coach in surprising decision

Via Jeff Stoutland himself, the long-time offensive line coach for the Eagles is leaving Philadelphia. It remains unknown at this point if he will keep coaching or retire. Regardless, his time with the Eagles is over after thirteen seasons with three different coaching staffs.

“Philadelphia, I’ve decided my time coaching with the Eagles has come to an end. When I arrived here in 2013, I did not know what I was signing up for. I quickly learned what this city demands. But more importantly, what it gives back. The past 13 years have been the great privilege of my coaching career. I didn’t just work here, I became one of you. Stout out” — Stoutland via social media

Stoutland played a massive role in the development of players like Jordan Mailata, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, among others along the OL for Philadelphia.

Bold decision by Nick Sirianni’s staff may be part of the reason Stoutland is leaving

According to Jeff McLane, Stoutland lost some of his say in the run game this past season. Midway through the campaign, the Eagles began implementing different run designs in a decision that Stoutland was not consulted on by the other staff members.

“[Nick Sirianni] and OC Kevin Patullo began incorporating different run designs in an effort to kick start the operation. Stoutland was not consulted about the changes to what he felt was an appropriate degree, a league source said, to the point where he no longer desired the title of run game coordinator because he felt it no longer fit his job description. That experience gave him pause about continuing on with the organization.” — Tim McManus

In 2024, Stoutland played a key hand in the run game presence where running back Saquon Barkley set the record for most rushing yards in a season, including the playoffs. He has had an influence on that part of the offense since 2018. It wasn’t anything new.

There seems that there was a level of disrespect involved from the decision-making from Sirianni and his staff last season, and that sounds like a major reason he’s exiting the organization now. That’s not a good look for the contingency in that room for Philly, whatsoever.

For the Eagles, this is a massive hole on their coaching staff now. Stoutland was beloved around the NFL, and there is a legitimate belief he’s one of the best offensive line minds in football. Tons of respect for him throughout.

However, the situation clearly wasn’t what he was hoping for with the Eagles any longer. They’ll need to find his replacement under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
