Jim Schwartz should have an even easier choice in front of him to stick with the Cleveland Browns following NFL Honors
Myles Garrett winning the Defensive Player of the Year award is even more reason for Jim Schwartz to return.
The Cleveland Browns have already put together much of their coaching staff under new head coach Todd Monken. Monken plans on keeping much of the defensive coaching staff together, while bringing in his own offensive staff.
One question, and it’s the biggest one, is whether or not defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is going to return to lead the defense.
In my opinion, he just got some more ammo on why he should give it another go in Cleveland.
Myles Garrett and Carson Schwesinger winning at NFL Honors is more reason for Jim Schwartz to return
Garrett is now a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year after taking home the award Thursday night, after first winning the award back in 2024. This season, Garrett broke the single-season sack record with 23.5 sacks in 17 games. Despite Cleveland’s 5-12 record, Garrett was the easy pick for DPOY and it was a unanimous vote.
It wasn’t just Garrett being recognized from the Browns defense, Carson Schwesinger is the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year after a standout season. With Schwartz’s future with the team up in the air, seeing two members of the Browns defense should be a firm reminder of what he has waiting for him in Cleveland.
Schwartz has had Garrett each of his three seasons in Cleveland and 2025 was the now two-time Defensive Player of the Year’s best season yet. Besides the 23.5 sacks, Garrett totaled 60 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles.
Schwesinger has been in Cleveland just one season and his year of 156 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions in 16 games shows a bright future ahead. The star linebacker is just scratching the surface, and it’s wild to think what Cleveland’s linebacker room could be if Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is able to get back on the field and return to form.
There’s no better defense for Schwartz to coach in 2025, as he’s under contract for two more seasons with the Browns. The longtime defensive coach can either take the season off, or be the play caller for the Browns’ defense.
Schwartz wants to be a head coach again and remaining the Browns’ defensive coordinator is his best bet toward doing so. The NFL Honors are a great reminder of what Schwartz can still have in Cleveland.
